I started taking it regularly.

Expert Dietitian Advice: Should You Take a Collagen Supplement, or Not?

Safety-first disclaimer: As a wellness expert (myself) you should always ask your doctor or medical professional about taking a supplement before trying it yourself.

Before you get all the facts and my review of mindbodygreen collagen+, I wanted to ask a few Registered Dietitians about their honest opinion and expert advice on if people should take a collagen supplement.

Why?

Because in my opinion, not everyone should take supplements, but here's what the experts say:

Jenna Volpe, RDN, LD, CLT, founder of Whole-istitc Living has some great advice:

“When it comes to nutrition and supplements, one size never fits all, so not everyone will benefit from taking a collagen supplement. However, in my opinion based on clinical experience and research, many people could benefit from taking a collagen supplement since it provides more therapeutic doses compared to food sources of collagen.

For example, type 2 collagen (cartilage) in pill form has been clinically proven to help reduce joint pain among people with arthritis.

A new study from May 2022 also concluded that women who supplemented with collagen peptides for just 6 weeks has helped people with mild gut issues such as bloating, constipation, abdominal pain, and reflux.”

Jenna's final verdict: “All in all, I believe many people with joint pain and/or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can benefit from taking collagen supplements.”

It appears that the second study Jenna referred to showed women having good results in terms of improving gut health after taking a collagen supplement for 6 weeks. The good news is that mindbodygreen beauty & gut collagen+ is made just for that.

Beata Rydyger, BSc, RHN believes a collagen supplement isn't always necessary, but could be something to consider. Here's what she said:

“Collagen supplementation is not necessary but could be a useful addition to an already healthy, balanced diet. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body that is formed naturally by combining amino acids. These amino acids, in addition with other vital nutrients, are readily available in a variety of healthy, whole foods. Research is still limited when it comes to collagen supplementation, however since collagen production gradually lowers as we age, it could be a useful tool for filling in the gaps.”

Julianna Coughlin, MS RD LDN, writer at Ghostbed, has a great thought about taking collagen supplements:

“Like most supplements, there is a large question of if this will work or not for you specifically. Most people have very different results with many different supplements and that is the case for collagen because it can have a lot of benefits and also does not really have many side effects so if you think it might be helpful and you have the money, I would say give it a go, but don’t expect it to be a miracle pill.”

Now that you have some experts share their advice, here are the key facts about mindbodygreen beauty & gut collagen+ before we get into all the details.

What Is Grass-Fed Collagen?

There are a few different types of collagens on the market, one of them being grass-fed, instead of just basic collagen. Grass-fed collagen is a high-quality, often organic option that is far superior to other options. Collagen is often sourced from animals, and the conditions that these grass-fed animals live in is much better than other facilities that mass produce their products and foods. Grass-fed usually means that those animals don’t receive antibiotics, which could negatively impact the quality of the collagen if it were present. When you’re looking for collagen products, it’s beneficial to know what’s out there so you can avoid the things that aren’t helpful.

What Are the Benefits of Grass-Fed Collagen?

A number of studies have been done to determine how beneficial collagen supplements are for the body. When our bodies start to produce less (we lose 50 percent of our collagen by the age of 60), we can experience less skin tone, more wrinkles, age spots, decreased bone health, joint pain, a breakdown of cartilage, inflammation and more. You can prevent and reverse these problems with the regular use of collagen. If you’ve been diagnosed with the beginning stages of arthritis, this is the supplement for you. You can also use collagen to build muscle, maintain a healthy weight and improve your gut health.

Ingredients of MindBodyGreen Beauty & Gut Collagen+

Two different Mindbodygreen collagen mixes in spoons

One of the first things that I do when I’m shopping for a new supplement is to look at a breakdown of the ingredients included. Here’s what’s inside of MindBodyGreen Beauty & Gut Collagen+.

Grass-Fed Collagen

The grass-fed collagen peptides in MindBodyGreen Beauty & Gut Collagen+ contain amino acids that can support healthy and youthful skin, strong hair and nails as well as a healthy intestinal lining and gut microbiome. As the most abundant protein in the body, collagen will keep your bones and muscles strong, joints healthy and blood vessels clear and strong.

The collagen in MindBodyGreen Beauty & Gut Collagen+ is sourced from grass-fed, pasture-raised cows.

Hyaluronic Acid

One hundred milligrams of hyaluronic acid are included in this product thanks to its ability to enhance skin moisture and texture, while also reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that are inevitable as we age. This acid can also help lubricate our tissues and joints.

Vitamins C & E

Vitamin C is necessary for collagen production, and vitamin E is essential for normal collagen cross-linking. These two ingredients have potent antioxidant properties that can help protect the body from free radical damage and oxidative stress. You’ll age more gracefully and healthy with the use of vitamins C and E.

Biotin

Five hundred micrograms of biotin have been added to MindBodyGreen Beauty & Gut Collagen+. This is a water-soluble B vitamin that helps maintain healthy skin, hair and nails. Biotin is also used for glucose metabolism and to maintain healthy energy levels throughout the day.

L-Glutamine

The amino acid L-glutamine is an essential building block for a lot of the tissues and proteins that are in the body, such as collagen. This is a nutrient that our gut uses to maintain a healthy intestinal lining and to decrease inflammation.

Turmeric & Sulforaphane Glucosinolate

Turmeric is a root that has a high level of curcuminoids in it. Sulforaphane glucosinolate is a phytochemical that can be found in various cruciferous vegetables. These ingredients have antioxidant properties that support a natural detoxification process while also fighting back against oxidative stress.

My Review of MindBodyGreen Beauty & Gut Collagen+

Example of how to use mindbodygreen collagen mix

I would definitely consider myself a healthy and wellness enthusiast, so I’m always interested in learning more about different supplements, nutrients and ingredients that can help me live my best life. There’s so much to take into consideration when you’re thinking about your overall health. It’s really easy to get overwhelmed. After learning about collagen, I decided that I thought it could be beneficial for me. I had been having a little bit of back pain and joint pain after workouts, and I was trying to find ways to decrease inflammation naturally. I also liked the sound of the anti-aging benefits and gut health improvements that can be achieved with regular collagen use.

I love when I can control the amount of product that I consume, so I loved that MindBodyGreen Beauty & Gut Collagen+ was a powdered supplement. I have opted for the unflavored option, as I wanted to add it to my morning or afternoon smoothie. I’m sure the chocolate flavor is fine, but it wasn’t going to be practical for what I wanted from a collagen supplement. One scoop of product contains almost 18 grams of collagen, along with plenty of other nutritional ingredients. I like that it doesn’t contain anything extra like artificial sweeteners or colors.

I have been using MindBodyGreen Beauty & Gut Collagen+ for a number of months now, and I’ve been pretty consistent with it. I’ve skipped a dose here and there, but it’s generally part of my daily routine. I’ve noticed that my back pain and joint health have improved immensely. I also feel like my recovery period after my workouts is shorter. Beauty benefits weren’t necessarily why I was looking for a collagen supplement, but I think my hair has been growing faster and fuller. I definitely plan on continuing with this specific collagen supplement, and I’ve recommended it to my family and friends as well.

What I Liked

I appreciated the ability to scoop a convenient powdered supplement into my smoothie, blend it up and reap the benefits of collagen peptides. It was nice to know that MindBodyGreen included both types I and III collagen in their product for increased bioavailability and benefits. There really wasn’t anything negative that I needed to deal with while getting used to this product. It was a gentle progression towards a healthier me.

What I Didn’t Like

I don’t like the taste of this product on its own. It’s definitely something that I feel needs to be mixed with a liquid of some other type. It also doesn’t mix all that great in something like a glass of water. It works just fine in a smoothie, which already has a slightly gritty texture to it.

What Could Be Improved?

I’d like to see some other flavors available for this product. I’m not a big fan of chocolate-flavored proteins, nutritional blends, etc. I think it would be also great if MindBodyGreen decided to sell this collagen in convenient travel packages. Some other collagen brands do that, which makes it really nice to take on the go. I’m not apt to pack this entire package of product into my bag and take it with me, but I would definitely keep some smaller packages in my gym bag or work bag for a quick dose of collagen.

Average Rating and Real MindBodyGreen Beauty & Gut Collagen+ Reviews

On the MindBodyGreen website, you can view the ratings and reviews for their collagen supplement. This product currently has a rating of four out of five stars. There are nine pages of reviews listed. The brand seems to post the majority of their reviews, even if they’re negative. I appreciate that transparency from a brand. Not everybody is going to love a product, and it’s nice to know why people liked something as well as why it wasn’t liked. The people who didn’t prefer MindBodyGreen Beauty & Gut Collagen+ felt the same way I did about the taste and the texture. It was favored by many for improving overall health and beauty.

Alternatives Compared to MindBodyGreen Beauty & Gut Collagen+

Here are some other highly rated collagen supplements that I would recommend if you’re interested in learning about other options aside from what MindBodyGreen has to offer.

Primal Harvest Collagen

primal harvest collagen powder for joints

Primal Harvest offers this premium collagen peptides product that contains types I and III collagen sourced from grass-fed bovine. These cows are pasture-raised without any antibiotics or hormones. The formulation of this product is intended for benefits like healthy bones, youthful skin, strong joints and more. Primal Harvest Primal Collagen is an instant mix formula that is unflavored. Made in a GMP-certified facility in the U.S., this is a highly bioavailable product that has a complete amino acid profile. Primal Harvest suggests that you give this product three months to see its full potential.

1st Phorm Collagen

1st phorm collagen with dermaval - hair growth

1st Phorm has a high-quality Collagen with Dermaval product that’s part of their lineup. This product is manufactured using a low-temperature process that increases the bioavailability of the collagen inside. There are five different kinds of collagen included, along with a full amino acid profile. The Dermaval aspect of this product contains a phytonutrient-rich complex that supports healthy levels of elastin in the body. This can benefit anything from hair growth to bone health. This easy to mix formula can be added to any liquid of your choosing. It’s free of artificial additives and preservatives (as well as flavors and colors).

Transparent Labs Collagen

Eleven grams of hydrolyzed bovine collagen are included in each dose of Transparent Labs Collagen. This product can accommodate for the lack of collagen that our body produces as we get older. Instead of letting wrinkles and sagging skin occur, you can prevent signs of aging with Transparent Labs Collagen. By delivering bio-active peptides to the skin, tissues and body, you can see quite a transformation in your appearance and your overall health. It’s essential for athletes, aging adults and everyone in between. This product only comes in chocolate, and unfortunately it contains non-organic natural flavors and stevia.

The Bottom Line

It really doesn’t take a lot of effort to add a collagen supplement into your daily routine. Because of its easy powder formulation, you can add it into your water, juice, smoothie, coffee or tea. You barely know that it’s there, but you’ll definitely start to notice a slight change in how you feel and look in just a few short weeks. I recommend giving a supplement like MindBodyGreen Collagen a few months in order to really see what it can do for you.

The great thing about this collagen supplement is that it’s providing you with something that your body is capable of producing on its own. It’s just unfortunate that we can’t keep up with that production as we get older. With a reputable and trusted brand like MindBodyGreen, you can fill in those gaps so that you don’t start to see a decline as you age.

Should You Give MindBodyGreen Collagen and Try?

Mindbodygreen collagen used to make a variety of drinks

There’s really nothing to lose when you try MindBodyGreen Collagen. This is a very simple, yet effective product that is well tolerated by most people. You don’t have to worry about mega dosing on certain nutrients or vitamins. There isn’t anything in this product that you don’t need. If I were you, I would make the investment in this supplement to see how it makes you feel. After trying one full bag, you should have a good idea of whether or not it’s beneficial for you. It’s a high-quality product, so you can trust that you’re putting something pure and safe into your body.
